Description
This American Flying Cross is a bronze patte cross that has super-imposed propeller blades with rays extending from between the arms. It has a flat and blank reverse. It is suspended from a rectangular bar and silk ribbon with a simple hinge pin. Also included is the silk ribbon bar with the original hinge pin and an enamel lapel badge.
The black case is lined in gold flocking on bottom and gold satin on lid. The staggered bar hinge and spring are intact and fully functional. The case shows some spotting to the top lid.
This is a one of a kind item and you will receive the exact one photographed.
The Distinguished Flying Cross, established in 1926, is awarded to those who distinguish themselves, while participating in aerial flight operations by extraordinary achievement. During WW2 the criteria varied, depending on the theater of operations, missions accomplished and aerial combat. In the Pacific, commissioned officers were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, while enlisted men were awarded the Air Medal. In Europe, often the sole survivors of their bomber crew, received it for completing a tour of duty of twenty-five sorties. It was also awarded to members of the Armed Forces of foreign nations and instructors or students at flying schools.
