Description
This Griswold US paratrooper drop bag was meant to hold a disassembled M1 Garand, an M1 Carbine, or a Thompson SMG.
The guns were usually broken down into three sections: barrel, stock, and trigger group. Many complaints came from Normandy paratroopers who lost precious seconds removing their weapon from the ‘Griswold Bag’ and assembling and loading the M-1 while enemy troops approached.
Starting with Market-Garden, Riggers began mounting an extension on the Griswold Bags, enabling jumpers to descend with a fully assembled and loaded M-1 rifle in the bag.
On the rear side is the regulatory marking contract # 43623402
It has the silver snap hook on the reverse which attached the bag to a metal loop mounted high on the right chest portion of the main jump harness.
It was distributed to all airborne divisions engaged in Europe (17th, 82nd and 101st AB).
